I-485 Supp. J
Confirmation of Valid Job Offer or Request for Job Portability Under INA Section 204(j)
Form I-485 Supplement J, Confirmation of Valid Job Offer or Request for Job Portability Under INA Section 204(j), goes with an employment-based Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. USCIS says it is used to confirm that the job offered in Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Workers, remains a valid job offer the applicant intends to accept when Form I-485 is approved, or to request job portability under INA section 204(j) to a new, full-time, permanent job offer in the same or a similar occupational classification.
The instructions say USCIS does not decide whether the applicant has current work authorization with the prospective employer, since the basis for adjustment is prospective employment. They also say people seeking or granted a National Interest Waiver, or classification as an alien of extraordinary ability, do not need to file Supplement J.
The USCIS page lists edition 09/18/26 for Supplement J. Its alert says USCIS will only accept the 09/18/26 edition of Form I-485 if it is postmarked or electronically submitted on or after Sept. 18, 2026.
One box: confirm the job offered in Form I-140 remains a valid job offer, or request job portability under INA section 204(j) to a new, full-time, permanent job offer.
Legal name, U.S. mailing address, A-Number, USCIS online account number, date and country of birth, the Form I-485 receipt number and filing date, the Form I-140 receipt number and whether it is approved.
The applicant's contact details, certification and signature, then the interpreter's section and the section for the person who prepared Parts 1 to 4.
Business or individual employer, mailing address and the physical address where the applicant will work, and for a business its name, EIN, entity type, activity, date established, U.S. employees, gross and net annual income and NAICS code.
Job title, SOC code, a nontechnical job description, whether the job is full-time and permanent, the wages offered, and whether the applicant already works for the employer.
Contact details, certification and signature of the individual employer or authorized signatory, the employer's interpreter section, and additional information space.
Choose either confirming the job offered in Form I-140 or requesting job portability. Write N/A where a question does not apply and None for a zero, and keep the edition date and page numbers visible on a printed copy.
Enter the Form I-485 receipt number and filing date if already filed, the Form I-140 receipt number, and whether Form I-140 is approved: Yes, No or Unknown.
The USCIS page says to include the employer's physical address, and that an incorrect address, such as an attorney's address in place of the employer's, or missing information may lead to a Request for Evidence.
Codes go left to right, one digit per box. The instructions say to add zeros after a short NAICS code, so 5133 is entered as 513300.
The instructions list a copy of Form I-797 showing Form I-485 pending 180 days or more and, if available, Form I-797 for the Form I-140. Other evidence can show the new job is in the same or a similar occupational classification.
The instructions say the applicant and the individual employer or authorized signatory both sign, and a stamped or typewritten name is not accepted. This page lets you fill the form online free, then print it for signature.
You get the real form, filled in a browser tab, with nothing standing between you and the finished PDF.
The USCIS page says Supplement J goes with Form I-485 at its filing address, at the Form I-485 filing address for portability after 180 days, or with an RFE or NOID response at the address in that notice.
With a pending Form I-485 that has a receipt number beginning with IOE, the page says Supplement J may be filed online by itself, except for Form G-28. It says not to file online when requesting to transfer the underlying basis of a pending Form I-485.
The USCIS page points to its Fee Schedule page, and the instructions point to Form G-1055. Fees can change, so check them on the day you file.
USCIS issues a receipt number for an accepted Supplement J. The page says the Contact Center can give status on a portability request after 120 days from the date on the Supplement J receipt notice.
The page says USCIS may use the Validation Instrument for Business Enterprises (VIBE) to validate basic information about the companies or organizations listed on Supplement J.
The instructions say USCIS reviews the whole record, including the similarity of job duties and of education, experience or training requirements, and may refer to Department of Labor resources such as O*NET and the SOC system.
No tool matches that search.
The USCIS page says it is not needed when Form I-485 is filed together with a Form I-140 naming the applicant. The instructions also exclude National Interest Waiver and extraordinary ability cases.
The instructions say only after a properly filed Form I-485 has been pending 180 days or more since the receipt date, based on an approved or pending Form I-140 naming the applicant. USCIS rejects a portability request filed sooner.
Yes. The instructions say each supplement is signed by both the applicant and the individual employer or an authorized signatory of the business entity employer.
The USCIS page lists mail and online filing. It may be filed online with Form I-485, or by itself when a Form I-485 with an IOE receipt number is pending, but not online for a transfer of underlying basis request.
The USCIS page alert says USCIS will only accept the 09/18/26 edition of Form I-485 if postmarked or electronically submitted on or after Sept. 18, 2026, and will reject the 01/20/25 and 09/04/26 editions.
USCIS fees change, so this page does not list one. The Supplement J page links to the USCIS Fee Schedule, and the instructions point to Form G-1055.
