The PDF with a number on every page

Adding page numbers to a PDF stamps a number on each page so readers can cite, print and reassemble the document. This tool numbers every page of your file, starting from 1 on the first page. Each label shows the page number, a slash and the page count, for example 3 / 12. You choose one of four positions, the font size, the margin from the page edge, the text color and the opacity. The numbers are drawn on top of the page as real text in Helvetica. They become part of the page, so keep your original file in case you want a different look later.

What can you do when you add page numbers to a PDF?

Choose where the number sits

Position offers Bottom center, Top center, Bottom right and Bottom left, with Bottom center selected to begin with. Margin sets how far the number sits from the page edge in points. It starts at 24, which is a third of an inch.

Set size, color and opacity

Font size accepts 6 to 72 and starts at 12. Text color takes a hex code such as #000000 for black. Opacity runs from 0, which is invisible, to 1, which is fully opaque, and starts at 0.7.

Number mixed page sizes evenly

The position is worked out for each page from that page's own width and height. A file that mixes page sizes still gets its number at the same distance from the edge on every page.

Show the total on every page

Each label carries the page count as well as the page number. Someone holding one printed sheet can see how long the full document is and spot a missing page.

What page numbering keeps and changes

Stays the same

  • The page count, the page order and the page sizes.
  • Everything already on the pages. Nothing is moved or shrunk to make room for the number.
  • The PDF on your device. You download a new copy.

Changes

  • Every page gains a label such as 3 / 12, set in Helvetica and drawn over the page.
  • The label is real text, so it can be selected, copied and found with search.
  • Position, font size, margin, color and opacity apply to every page the same way.
  • The numbers become part of each page, and this tool cannot take them off again.

Why add page numbers with indox?

Page numbers are easy to add and hard to take back, so this tool keeps the choices few and predictable. Five settings apply to the whole file, the label format is fixed, and the result is a new PDF, which leaves your original free for a second try. The label is real text, so a reader can search for it or copy it. If the stamp cannot be applied, the job fails, and you are never handed an unnumbered copy marked as finished. Numbering one PDF takes no account. The file travels over HTTPS, and free-tier copies are erased automatically no later than 24 hours after the job is done.

  • Four positions: bottom center, top center, bottom right, bottom left
  • Font size, margin, color and opacity are yours to set
  • Labels show page and total, like 3 / 12
  • Numbers are searchable text in Helvetica
  • A failed stamp fails the job, with no unnumbered copy

What are the limits when you add page numbers?

Size
The free tier has a file size limit. Signing in raises it, and paid plans raise it further.
Formats
This tool works on PDF files. To change a file's type, use the PDF converter.
Privacy
Files are encrypted in transit and processed on indox infrastructure.
Deletion
Free-tier files are deleted automatically within 24 hours after the job finishes. Signed-in output stays in your history for your plan's retention period.

Limits worth knowing

  • Every page is numbered and the first page is always 1. You cannot skip a cover page, start from another number or number only part of the file.
  • The label format is fixed as page / total, such as 3 / 12. You cannot switch to Page 3, Roman numerals or your own wording, and the font is always Helvetica.
  • Top left, top right and the middle of the page are not offered as positions.
  • The tool does not look for page numbers that are already there. If the PDF has them, the new labels are stamped as a second set.
  • The number is drawn over whatever sits at that spot, and its place is measured on the page as the file stores it. If a footer is in the way, change Position or Margin. On pages that were rotated or cropped earlier, check where the number landed.

Who adds page numbers to a PDF?

  • Students and writers

A report or assignment was exported without numbers and the brief asks for them. This fits when every page, cover included, may carry a number.

  • Legal and admin teams

A bundle of exhibits or a contract pack needs a number on every sheet so people can point to a page in a call. The total in each label also shows when a sheet is missing.

  • Anyone printing a long document

Loose printed pages get shuffled. A number and a total on each sheet let you put the stack back in order.

When to add page numbers

  • A scanned contract has no page numbers and you need to cite a clause by page.
  • A PDF put together from several unnumbered files needs one running sequence.
  • You are printing handouts and want each sheet to show its place in the set.
  • A reviewer asked for page references and the export left the numbers out.

Add page numbers FAQs

What do the page numbers look like?

Each page shows its number, a slash and the page count, for example 3 / 12. The text is set in Helvetica in the size and color you choose.

Can I skip the cover page or start from a different number?

No, every page is numbered and the count starts at 1 on the first page.

Can I use Page 1 of 10 or Roman numerals?

No, the label is always the page number, a slash and the total.

Where on the page can the number go?

Bottom center, top center, bottom right or bottom left. Use Margin to move it closer to the edge or further from it.

Can I remove the page numbers later?

This tool cannot remove them, because they are drawn into each page. Keep the original PDF so you can start again from it.

Why do the numbers look faint?

Opacity starts at 0.7, which lets a little of the page show through. Set it to 1 for solid numbers.

My PDF already has page numbers. What happens?

The tool does not detect them. It stamps its own label on every page, so both sets are visible.

Should I number the pages before or after reordering?

After. A stamped number stays with its page, so finish removing and reordering pages first and add the numbers as the last step.
