A PDF with uncompressed streams

Inside a PDF, page instructions, fonts and images are stored in blocks called streams, and those streams are normally compressed to save space. Decompress PDF asks the indox PDF engine to uncompress them and returns the result as a new PDF. The usual reason is inspection: with the compression gone, a text editor shows more of what the file contains. You add one PDF and run the job. There is nothing to set, because the page shows no option field for this tool, and the copy on your device is left as it was. To make a file smaller, use Compress PDF, which works in the other direction.

What can you do when you decompress a PDF?

Uncompress in one run

The job carries a single instruction, decompress, and no parameters. indox passes your PDF to its engine and writes what comes back as the download.

Skip the configuration

The Options card shows the output format, PDF, and no other field. You cannot pick pages or kinds of stream, so every run on a given file asks for the same thing.

Read the file in a text editor

A decompressed copy is meant for people who look inside PDFs. Open it in a plain text editor to read the page instructions that compression normally hides, or search it for an operator or a string.

Compare two versions of a document

Text comparison tools work poorly on compressed data. Decompress both versions here, then put the two copies through a diff tool to see which objects differ.

What decompressing keeps and what it changes

Stays the same

  • Every page, in the same order, with the same text, images and fonts.
  • The output is still a PDF that a normal viewer opens.
  • The file on your device. You download a new copy.

Changes

  • Each stream that has a compression filter is decoded and its filter entries are removed, so the data is stored as plain bytes.
  • Page instructions become readable in a text editor. Image and font streams are unpacked too, so an editor shows them as unreadable binary.
  • The file is saved with no compression of its own, so it is often larger than the original.
  • A stream the engine cannot decode is skipped and the job carries on, so a damaged file can come back partly compressed.

How to decompress a PDF in 3 steps

  1. Add the PDF

Drop one PDF on the upload box, or click the box and browse for it. Press Replace if you added the wrong file.

  2. Run the job as it is

No settings appear for this tool. Press Run Decompress PDF and wait for the progress bar to finish.

  3. Download the decompressed copy

Choose Download on the result card, then open the file in a text editor or in the tool you use to inspect PDFs.

Why decompress a PDF with indox?

Decompressing a PDF is a narrow job, and this page treats it that way. There is nothing to install and no setting to learn: you add a file and press one button. The page states what the job asks for, uncompressed streams, and it does not dress the result up as a repaired, cleaned or smaller file. If the engine cannot process the PDF, the job fails and you see an error, and the upload is not sent back in its place. A single decompress job runs without an account. The file is sent over HTTPS, and on the free tier indox removes it automatically within 24 hours after the job finishes.

  • One instruction, no parameters
  • Nothing to install
  • Errors reported, never a returned upload
  • One job without signing in
  • Free-tier files deleted within 24 hours after the job

What are the limits when you decompress a PDF?

Size
Guests have a lower file size limit. Signing in raises it; a paid plan does not change it.
Formats
This tool works on PDF files. To change a file's type, use the PDF converter.
Privacy
Files are encrypted in transit and processed on indox infrastructure.
Deletion
Free-tier files are deleted automatically within 24 hours after the job finishes. Signed-in output stays in your history for your plan's retention period.

Limits worth knowing

  • You cannot choose which streams are uncompressed or limit the job to certain pages. The page has no setting at all for this tool.
  • indox does not list what changed. The result card offers the download and says nothing about the number of streams or the new size.
  • A decompressed PDF is a working copy for inspection. For sending or storing a document, keep the original or run Compress PDF on it.
  • Uncompressing does not turn a PDF into plain prose. Expect drawing commands, object numbers and blocks of image or font data, not a clean text version of the document.
  • A locked PDF cannot be given its password here. Remove the password with Unlock PDF and decompress the unlocked copy.

Who decompresses PDFs?

  • Developers who generate PDFs

A report library produces a file that prints wrongly. Decompress the output and read the page instructions to find the command that misplaces the text.

  • Support and QA engineers

Two builds of one document behave differently in a viewer. Decompress both and diff them to narrow the change down to a few objects.

  • Students of the PDF format

Reading the specification is easier with a real file open next to it. A decompressed copy lets you match objects in the file to the chapters that describe them.

When to decompress, and when to pick another tool

  • You want to read the page instructions of a PDF in a text editor.
  • You need to compare two PDFs object by object with a diff tool.
  • You are tracing a rendering bug back to the commands that draw one page.
  • You only want facts about the file, such as page count, fonts or encryption. Get PDF Info reports those directly.
  • You want a smaller file. Decompressing goes the wrong way, so use Compress PDF.

Decompress PDF FAQs

What does decompressing a PDF do?

It uncompresses the streams inside the file, the blocks that hold page instructions, fonts and images. The document stays a PDF. What changes is how its contents are stored.

Why would I decompress a PDF?

To look inside it. People who build, test or study PDFs decompress a file so that a text editor or a diff tool can show its page instructions.

Are there any options?

None. The page lists the output format, PDF, and has no other field for this tool. Every job sends the same single instruction.

Will the file get bigger?

indox does not report the new size, so compare the size on the file card with the downloaded file. Compression is there to save space, so a copy without it should not be expected to shrink.

Does it change how the PDF looks?

The job does not ask for any edit to pages, text or images. It only asks for the streams to be stored uncompressed. This page shows no preview, so open the result if the appearance matters to you.

Can I decompress a password-protected PDF?

The page has nowhere to type a password. Unlock the file with Unlock PDF first, then add the unlocked copy here.

What happens if the job fails?

The error card appears with a message and a Try another button. No file is produced, and the tool does not return your upload unchanged.

Do I need an account, and is my file kept?

One job runs without an account. The upload goes over HTTPS, and files on the free tier are deleted automatically within 24 hours after the job finishes.
