A copy that opens without it

Unlocking a PDF means saving a copy that opens without a password and carries no printing or editing restrictions. This tool does that for files you are allowed to open. You type the current password, indox decrypts the document with it, and you download an unprotected copy. It does not guess or recover a password. When the password is wrong, the job fails and no file comes back. Use it only on PDFs you own or have permission to change. Bookmarks, form fields and attachments come through intact. A single file needs no account, uploads use HTTPS, and indox removes free-tier files automatically within 24 hours after the job ends.

What can you do when you unlock a PDF?

Remove the open password

Type the password in Current password and run the tool. The copy you download opens with no password prompt.

Clear printing and editing restrictions

indox writes the copy without encryption, so no permission restrictions remain on it. Do this only for a document you own or are authorized to change.

Leave bookmarks and forms in place

Unlocking removes the protection and leaves the document alone. Bookmarks, form fields and attached files arrive in the copy.

Get an error on a wrong password

When the password does not match, the job stops and the page reports that it could not process the file. You do not get a file back, locked or otherwise.

What unlocking keeps and what it changes

Stays the same

  • Page content, page order and page count.
  • Bookmarks, form fields and attached files.
  • Your original, which keeps its password.

Changes

  • The copy is written without encryption, so it opens with no password and carries no permission restrictions.
  • A digital signature on the original no longer validates on the copy, because the file is rewritten.
  • A PDF that was never protected still comes back as a copy.

Why unlock a PDF with indox?

indox unlocks a file the way its owner would, with the password. For a PDF that needs one to open, the tool decrypts with what you type and stops with an error when it does not match. There is no guessing mode and no password recovery. What comes back is a plain copy of the same document, with its bookmarks, form fields and attachments in place, ready to print or to run through another PDF tool. You work on one file at a time, and a single file runs without an account.

  • Decrypts with the password you type
  • Stops with an error on a wrong password
  • Document structure carried into the copy
  • Original file left untouched
  • One PDF per run, no account needed

What are the limits when you unlock a PDF?

Size
The free tier has a file size limit. Signing in raises it, and paid plans raise it further.
Formats
This tool works on PDF files. To change a file's type, use the PDF converter.
Privacy
Files are encrypted in transit and processed on indox infrastructure.
Deletion
Free-tier files are deleted automatically within 24 hours after the job finishes. Signed-in output stays in your history for your plan's retention period.

Limits worth knowing

  • The tool does not guess, crack or recover an open password. Without the correct one, the job fails and you download nothing.
  • indox checks the password only when the PDF needs one to open. A file that opens freely and only restricts printing or editing comes back without those restrictions, so unlock it only if it is yours or you have permission.
  • The form trims spaces from both ends of what you type. A password that starts or ends with a space will not match.
  • A PDF that was never protected still comes back as a copy, with no notice that there was nothing to remove.
  • The unlocked copy stays unprotected wherever you send it. Delete it when you finish, or protect it again with a new password.

Who unlocks PDFs?

  • People filing their own statements

Your bank, insurer or employer sends PDFs locked with a password they gave you. Unlock a copy so you can print it or open it later without retyping the password.

  • Teams that inherit protected files

A former colleague locked a contract or report, and the password is on record. Unlock it once so the document can be compressed, split or archived.

  • Owners changing a password

You protected a file earlier and now want a different password. Unlock it here, then run the copy through Protect PDF with the new one.

When to unlock a PDF

  • Before you compress, split or convert a password-protected PDF, since those tools need a file they can read.
  • When you own a document and need to print it, and printing is switched off.
  • When you open the same statement often and want a copy that skips the password prompt.
  • When you archive records and do not want to depend on an old password list.

Unlock PDF FAQs

Can indox unlock a PDF if I do not know the password?

It cannot. For a file that needs a password to open, indox decrypts with the password you enter and fails when it is wrong. It does not guess or recover passwords.

Which PDFs am I allowed to unlock?

Your own files, and files whose owner has given you permission. If a document belongs to someone else and nobody told you to remove its protection, leave it locked.

What happens when I type the wrong password?

The job ends with an error and produces no file. Check capital letters and typos, add the file again and retry.

Does unlocking remove printing and copying restrictions too?

Yes, the restrictions go with the encryption. The unlocked copy carries neither.

Does the original file change?

The original stays locked. indox works on the upload and returns a separate copy, so the PDF on your device keeps its password.

Will I lose bookmarks or form fields?

You keep them. Bookmarks, form fields and attachments move into the unlocked copy, and the pages stay in the same order.

Can I unlock several PDFs at once?

The workspace takes one PDF per run. Select Convert another after each download to start the next file.

How do I put a password back on the file?

Run the unlocked copy through Protect PDF and set a new open password. That tool encrypts the copy with AES-256.
