Schedule B (Form 1116): Foreign Tax Carryover Reconciliation Schedule

Schedule B (Form 1116), Foreign Tax Carryover Reconciliation Schedule, is a two-page schedule that the form says to attach to Form 1116. It tracks foreign tax carryover amounts by year, from the 10th preceding tax year through the current tax year, and ends with the foreign tax carryover to the following tax year on line 8.

The form says to use a separate Schedule B (Form 1116) for each applicable category of income and to check only one box on each schedule, the same separate category code shown on the Form 1116 it is attached to. The column (xiv) total on line 3 is included on the current year Form 1116, Part III, line 10.

The schedule does not print its instructions. It says "See separate instructions" and points to www.irs.gov/Form1116. You can fill it out free in your browser on this page and download the result without an account.

  • Filers of Form 1116

The form says "Attach to Form 1116," so it is completed by the person who files that form with their tax return.

  • One schedule per category of income

A separate Schedule B is used for each applicable category: foreign branch, passive or general category income, section 901(j) income, certain income re-sourced by treaty, or lump-sum distributions.

Line 1 asks for the foreign tax carryover from the prior tax year, entered from the appropriate columns of line 8 of the prior year Schedule B.

  • Filers with a current year carryover

Line 6 holds foreign tax carryover generated in the current tax year, and line 7 the actual or estimated amount of it to be carried back to the prior tax year.

The schedule asks for the name and the identifying number as shown on page 1 of the tax return. It does not itself say which taxpayers file Form 1116; that is in the separate instructions.
